University of Charleston

We understand that your first year of college can be an adjustment. Our First Year Experience curriculum provides you with the support and information you need to make your first year at UC a great experience.

Your first year can be both exciting and a little overwhelming. But don’t worry – you’ll be fine. And we’ll help – with our programs specifically created to help you navigate your first year successfully.

First Year Experience

The First Year Experience curriculum combines academic coursework with co-curricular and residential life activities to create an enriching higher educational journey. The courses are designed to help you adjust to your new surroundings and schedule.

A major aspect of that adjustment is learning the unique curriculum at UC and, with the help of your UNIV Mentor and Peer Educator, you will be able to understand our curriculum and how embedded classes work.

University Mentors

University Mentors are approachable, scholarly, and understanding individuals ready to jump-start your college journey. University Mentors are UC professors who guide you through your college transition within our UNIV (University) 101 and 102 programs.

Each of the University Mentors brings a unique perspective to the First Year Experience because of various backgrounds and educational journeys. The mentoring team, along with help from Peer Educators, strives to form strong one-on-one bonds with each of the students.

Peer Educators

Peer Educators are student leaders responsible for empowering and engaging First Year Students within the UNIV 101 and 102 programs. These top leaders help guide you through your academic and professional development, while also offering personalized support during your first year at UC.
