Student Engagement & Retention Coordinator

Position Summary:

The Title III Student Success Coordinator plays a critical role in supporting student persistence, engagement, and degree completion. This position provides individualized outreach, academic and personal support, and coordinates initiatives that strengthen retention and foster a vibrant, inclusive campus environment. The coordinator works collaboratively with faculty, advisors, and student support staff to identify student challenges, address barriers, and implement engagement opportunities that promote a culture of success for all students, including students with disabilities.

The position is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and therefore contingent on the renewal of the award. Although the position is paid with federal funds, the individual will be governed by University of Charleston policies and procedures.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide proactive advising and individualized support to students, focusing on academic progress, personal development, and overall persistence.
  • Monitor student progress, conduct outreach, and connect students with appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Identify and address academic, social, and personal barriers impacting student success.
  • Coordinate, implement, and assess retention focused programs aligned with Title III project goals.
  • Plan, promote, and execute campus-wide engagement initiatives that enhance student experience and strengthen student belonging.
  • Support engagement and retention efforts for all students, including students with disabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, advisors, student support services, and campus partners to maintain a coordinated and holistic approach to student success.
  • Contribute to institutional retention strategies through cross departmental partnerships.
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions, outreach, and program participation.
  • Assist with data collection, evaluation, and reporting related to retention and student success initiatives.
  • Occasional travel to Beckley campus may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in educational counseling, higher education, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in higher education, with emphasis on student success, retention, support services, or engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with diverse student populations and collaborate across departments.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment.
