University of Charleston

Members of the University of Charleston (UC) Builders serve as ambassadors for the University of Charleston. The organization was established as the Women Builders by President Leonard Riggleman in 1954. In 1990, the organization welcomed men to its membership and voted to adopt the name University of Charleston Builders. President Marty Roth values the members as builders of the vision and promoters of the image and growth of the University.

The UC Builders has been critical to the continued growth of the University, having donated more than $400,000 over its history for various projects. Members annual dues fund projects that help improve the quality of life for University students. In consultation with the University, members choose a plan and follow it through to completion. The projects have ranged from intellectual stimulation such as the purchase of library books and computer software to physical comforts such as the redecoration of the Student Lounge, Frankenberger Art Gallery, and Appalachian Room.
The Builders host a spring luncheon meeting, a fall luncheon meeting, and three or more Book and Author luncheons annually. The guest speaker for each luncheon typically is either someone associated with the University or a visiting scholar or West Virginia author.

The UC Builders’ success depends on their involved members. With over 250 members, the organization has been able to make a huge difference in the well-being of the University. Meetings are informative, enjoyable, and a great way to make connections.

In true Golden Eagle spirit, we are rising to another challenge presented by the pandemic.  As you may know, our UC Builders events have had to be moved online. Most of them will be offered through the Zoom application. In case you have questions about using Zoom, we have provided a bit of guidance.

Using Zoom

Zoom is video conferencing software that allows people to have face to face meetings with many people online. It is free and easy to access.

If you have never used Zoom before, rest assured, it’s easy. And it’s a great way to see and hear your fellow Builders virtually. To make it even easier, here is some basic information for using Zoom.  You can also find many tutorials on YouTube that will have you Zooming in no time!

First, you will need to download the Zoom app to your computer and/or your smartphone. Go to and from the Download Center, click on the Download button under “Zoom Client For Meetings”. This application will automatically download when you start your first Zoom Meeting.

Prior to the event, we will send you a link to that event. Just click on that link and you’re in!

When you join, you will be asked for your permission to access the microphone and speakers. This allows you to talk during the meeting. At the bottom of your screen, you will see a small microphone. If it has a red line through it, that means that your microphone is muted. If it does not, you will be able to speak. Remember to mute your microphone when you are not talking, so that if you have a talkative dog or other people in the room, they will not be heard. Just click on the ‘mute’ or ‘unmute’ button at the bottom of your screen.

Instead of speaking, you can also type your greetings and conversations. (This is a good way to ‘talk’ if your computer doesn’t have a microphone or speakers.) To do that, you can just click the Chat button in the menu bar. Simply type your message in the box, hit enter, and your message will be shared with the group.

When the meeting is over, just click on the Leave Meeting button.

We appreciate your being part of the UC Builders, and look forward to when we can all meet in person once again. In the meantime, if you have questions, please feel free to call our office.
