The English Program at the University of Charleston invites applications for the full-time position of Instructor of English. This nine-month position is scheduled to begin on January 5, 2026.
Position Summary:
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach first-year composition, focusing on written communication, critical thinking, and research skills across various rhetorical modes. The instructor will create and implement lesson plans that align with institutional and course objectives, employing effective teaching strategies that actively engage students in the learning process, encouraging critical thinking. The instructor is expected to provide timely, constructive feedback on assignments and to maintain accurate records of academic progress.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Teach 15 credit hours a semester (Spring and Fall)
- Provide instructional support for academic programs as assigned, including general education courses
- Develop and deliver courses in-seat or online as requested
- Assess student learning and contribute to program assessment
- Fulfill all functions of a full-time faculty member as defined in the faculty manual, including participation in service to the University, professional development, and innovative teaching.
- Hold office hours
- Participate in school, departmental, and faculty assembly meetings, graduation exercises, honors ceremonies and Faculty Institute as requested
- Perform duties relating to academic advising
- Support recruitment and retention initiatives within the School of Arts and Sciences and across the University.
- Update and maintain one’s personnel action file, including annual performance appraisals, teaching evaluations and peer classroom/online teaching observations.
Qualifications:
- An MA or higher in English and/or Composition
- Excellent communication skills
- Teaching experience
