Assistant or Associate Professor

Physician Assistant Program, University of Charleston

 

Position Summary:

This is a university faculty position with academic rank based upon the appointee’s academic and experiential qualifications. This faculty member’s duties are primarily instructional, generating and delivering classroom lectures and clinical skills instruction within the basic medical and clinical science topics for which he/she is qualified through academic preparation and/or experience. Other responsibilities include assisting with the delivery of the clinical curriculum and assisting with clinical site acquisition and maintenance, as well as developing, reviewing and revising as necessary the mission statement, goals and competencies of the program; selecting applicants for admission to the PA program; evaluating student performance; academic counseling of students; assuring the availability of remedial instruction; designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum; and evaluating the program. The person in this position will become a valued member of the PA program team, working with its staff, faculty, and program director to ensure program and instructional effectiveness and accreditation compliance.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

Teaching

  • Design and develop new curriculum, as needed, to include core knowledge about established and evolving biomedical and clinical sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care.
  • Implement, coordinate, review, and revise/modify existing curriculum, as appropriate, that correlates to established learning objectives aligned with course outcomes and program competencies.
  • Implement curricula in harmony with the educational approach of the UC PA program through active course direction and instruction.
  • Provide effective student instruction in areas of expertise and interest, as qualified through academic preparation and/or experience.
  • Evaluate student performance within areas of expertise and interest.
  • Mentor and provide academic counseling of students.
  • Maintain the security of student records.
  • Develop test questions and other forms of student assessment correlated to learning objectives.
  • Perform test question item analysis for courses assigned as the course director.
  • Assure the availability of remedial instruction and implement early intervention plans of action.
  • Assist with the grading of simulated patient encounters, clinical skills, and other grading as needed.

 

Accreditation/Assessment

  • Develop, review, and revise as necessary the mission statement, goals, and competencies of the program.
  • Review, update, and follow program policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate the curriculum.
  • Evaluate the program.
  • Collectively work with the program to review and revise learning objectives, learning outcomes, competencies, and program goals.
  • Participate in the PA Program continuous assessment processes by collecting, organizing, presenting, and analyzing data in a timely and effective manner.

 

Other

  • Participate in the selection of applicants for admission to the PA program.
  • Participate in activities of state, regional, and national organizations to promote a positive image of the PA concept within academic, lay, and professional communities.
  • Represent the Physician Assistant Program through service to the university, school, program, students, and community.
  • Identify potential clinical sites and secure affiliation agreements as needed.
  • Attend faculty, school, and university events, functions, and meetings as directed.
  • Pursue professional development activities such as clinical practice, scholarly works and activities, or an advanced degree.
  • Maintain NCCPA certification.
  • Maintain current CV.
  • Complete an annual self-evaluation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

Required

  • Master’s degree in physician assistant studies or bachelor’s degree in physician assistant studies with a graduate level degree in a healthcare-related field.
  • Current NCCPA certification.
  • Current Physician Assistant medical state licensure (preferably WV).
  • Strong interpersonal abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, preceptors, clinical site staff, and organization administrators.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Enthusiastic about working in a collaborative environment.
  • Self-motivated with refined organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated teaching skills.
  • Successful interview.
  • Commitment to student success.

Preferred

  • Experience as a physician assistant (2 or more years).
  • Experience in PA or higher education (2 or more years).
  • Experience with accreditation.
  • Experience with advising students in an educational environment.
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Familiar with the use of computers and office-based software for organization, word processing, and communication.
