About Labor of Love
Each year, UC lives part of its mission through its Labor of Love event. Held over the Labor Day weekend, students participate in a wide variety of service projects to uphold our commitment to living a “life of community service.”
The 2023 Labor of Love Day gave our community the chance to see our Golden Eagle spirit in action. We want to thank all of those who made it a success – it takes a lot of work to organize, from seeking out projects, securing transportation, organizing groups, reaching out for donations, and gathering supplies to making sure everyone was where they needed to be when they needed to be there, water bottles were at the ready, and the campus was informed.
We thank our sponsors – West Virginia American Water, Fifth Third Bank, Centurion Insurance, Poca Valley Bank, and Highmark West Virginia. We also want to thank Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority.
A few examples of projects this year included:
UC football players were in the Elk City area, creating planters, cleaning up parking areas, and performing general litter cleanup and other activities.
UC Biology students worked on trail cleanup and a butterfly garden in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Business students painted walls at the YWCA Mel Wolfe Child Development Center.
UC Pharmacy students cleaned and painted lockers at Piedmont Elementary School.
UC nursing students prepared and served meals at Manna Meal.
The track & field and cross-country teams were at the Charleston Convention Center working with the City of Charleston on cleaning and painting projects.
On campus, UC staff and students put together books and bouquets for Thomas Memorial Hospice, packed over 300 outreach bags for the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal, packed food bags for Elk River Backpack Blessings, created pocket pillows for pre-k students at Kanawha City Elementary, and more.
