Morrison Rehabilitation Science and Athletic Center
The Morrison Rehabilitation Science and Athletic Center is a state-of-the-art facility serving as the new home for the University of Charleston’s graduate programs in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.
These programs were designed to meet growing workforce demands across the region and nation in these critical areas of healthcare.
Located in the renovated Gorman Hall and former swimming pool space, the center features modern therapy labs, quiet study rooms, and inviting lounge and meeting areas, providing students with the tools and environment they need to succeed. The facility also includes a classroom, faculty and staff offices, and access to collaborative learning spaces.
In addition to its academic features, the Morrison Center brings key enhancements to UC’s athletic facilities. Renovated visitor locker rooms, upgraded weight training spaces, and new laundry areas improve the experience for student-athletes across campus.
This $10 million initiative, which includes program development and facility renovations, was made possible through the generosity of area foundations, individual donors, and external grant support.
The center is named in honor of the late J. Holmes Morrison, the longest-serving chair of UC’s Board of Trustees, a respected banker, and a pillar of the Charleston community.
Graduate Programs in Occupational and Physical Therapy
UC’s Master of Science in Occupational Therapy is an accelerated 3+2 program designed to prepare students to create innovative, evidence-based solutions for patients with increasingly complex needs. Students benefit from collaboration with other health professional programs throughout the university.
The Doctor of Physical Therapy program trains students in emerging healthcare technologies, including telehealth practices, virtual reality tools, and advanced rehabilitation equipment. Coursework includes musculoskeletal management, orthopedic physical therapy, and manual therapy techniques through hands-on, practical instruction.
Both programs are part of UC’s School of Health Sciences and are delivered in a hybrid format, combining online learning with in-person labs and clinical experiences.
J. Holmes Morrison Endowed Scholarship Fund
To further support the next generation of healthcare professionals, the University of Charleston has established the J. Holmes Morrison Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund is available to undergraduate students pursuing careers in rehabilitation science.
