Shopping

Hungry? You’re in luck.

From traditional cuisine to international fare, from plant-based menus to fast food options, Charleston offers a surprising array of dining options. You can get a great cup of coffee or get a little dressed up for several “date night” type spots.

Want to cook your own meal, or just grab a pantry full of snacks? There are places to do that, too. And if you just want a quick burger or a pizza, we have you covered there as well.

The campus is served by both Doordash and Grubhub. Many places also offer delivery.

Getting Groceries

Need snacks for your room, or meal prep ingredients, there are several options. Piggly Wiggly and Kroger grocery stores are both close to campus.

International foods can be found at Spice of Life and the Pacific International Market. You can visit the Asian Market in South Charleston as well.

Healthy Life Market, located in the Drug Emporium on MacCorkle Avenue, offers organic foods, supplements and more.

Tucked into a turn-of-the-century train station, the indoor-outdoor Capitol Market offers a mix of fresh from the farm produce and specialty shops, including artisan chocolates, seafood and sushi, and a WV-made gift shop. https://capitolmarket.net/

Restaurants Close to Campus

Near campus you can find most well-known chains, including McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Subway, Penn Station, Cookout, Jimmy Johns, Captain D’s, Burger King, Applebee’s, Cracker Barrel, and Arby’s.

There are also some independent spots nearby, including Pepperoni Grill, The Pitch, China One, Nawab Indian Cuisine, and Plaza Maya.

M&M Mart serves up deli style options, including subs and salads (and convenience store choices as well.)

You can also find food trucks on the Piggle Wiggly parking lot on a regular basis.

Downtown

Downtown features some great places to eat, whether you want breakfast, lunch, dinner, or evening fun.

Worth checking out for a meal are Pies and Pints, Adelphia Sports Bar, Black Sheep Burrito, First Watch, Recovery Grille, Firehouse Subs, The Loopy Leaf (plant based restaurants), Bricks and Barrels, Sam’s Uptown Cafe, and more.

Dessert? Don’t mind if we do! Visit Rock City Cakes or Ellen’s Ice Cream for some very sweet treats.

Options a little further from downtown include Barkadas (American, Filipino fusion) or Tricky Fish (beach themed spot near the capitol). Lolas in South Hills is also popular for pizza and sangria.

And if you are looking to impress a date, you can’t go wrong with Laury’s, Bricks and Barrels, or Bridge Road Bistro.

Coffee or Tea?

While it’s hard to beat the CT (since it is on campus), if you are out and about, there is a full Starbucks near campus, and the Daily Dose Café is also close by.  Want to add a doughnut or bagel to your morning brew? Donut Connection is a short trip down McCorkle Avenue.

Downtown options include Mea Cuppa, Appalachian Tea (with over 25 different types of tea), Starlings Coffee & Provisions and Taylor Books. They all serve up your favorite brew with baked goods and other items on the side.

Did you know? Considered West Virginia’s state food, the pepperoni roll can trace its roots back to the Italian immigrants who came to work in the coal mines. They were first commercially prepared in the state around 1927.
