Presidential Scholar Spotlight: Ella Zucchero’s Journey to UC

Charleston, WV – November 19, 2025 — When you grow up in a small Canadian town an hour outside Toronto, going to school in West Virginia isn’t the most obvious choice.
Originally from Acton, Ontario, (Class of 2028) always dreamed of playing college softball. She began reaching out to schools that offered the right mix: strong athletics, a warm climate, and a welcoming community, and the University of Charleston’s respected, successful program stood out early. After attending a softball camp in Charleston, she knew she’d found what she was searching for.
“I came down for a camp and loved everything about it,” she said. “The location was beautiful, the coaches and players were amazing. It just felt perfect.”
But as an international student, affordability was a major factor. That’s when she discovered UC’s Presidential Scholarship, a turning point in her decision-making.
“We were looking at every scholarship we could find,” she said. “The Presidential Scholarship was obviously the biggest. I had no idea I’d win it, but I felt lucky even to apply.”
What she didn’t expect was how much more came with the scholarship. The Presidential Scholarship covers full tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board. It also gives scholars the chance to meet regularly with President Roth for mentorship and leadership development. Impact-making members of the community are often invited to the meetings, providing additional support and networking opportunities.
“The connections have been the most rewarding part,” she said. “We meet with President Roth every month, and I’ve gotten to know scholars from all over the world. The conversations, the networking, it’s all opened doors I didn’t even know existed.”
Ella is currently majoring in Exercise Science and plans to continue into UC’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She has also developed an unexpected interest in business. Meeting local leaders showed her how valuable that knowledge could be if she opens her own PT practice someday.
“I’ve met so many people from so many different cultures, and I feel very close to them,” she said. The best advice I have for anyone who wants to apply for the scholarship is to be yourself. Everyone has their own story, and that’s what sets you apart and can help you get selected for this scholarship.”
For Ella Zucchero, her personal story led her to the US and the University of Charleston, and to a community that welcomed her from day one.
