Maddie RickardCHARLESTON, WV – November 19, 2025 — When Pittsburgh native Maddie Rickard began searching for colleges with strong radiologic science programs, the University of Charleston quickly rose to the top of her list. After touring the UC campus, she knew she’d found the right fit.

“I really liked how small and personal everything felt. Everyone here was so welcoming,” she said.

Once UC became a serious option, Maddie decided to take a chance and apply for the Presidential Scholarship, a decision she describes as a “why not?” moment that changed everything.

“I was in utter shock when I got the selection email. My whole family cried with me. I thought it was completely out of reach,” she said.

The Presidential Scholarship covers full tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board. It also gives scholars the chance to meet regularly with UC President Marty Roth for mentorship and leadership development, including conversations with impact-making community members invited to meet with the Scholars.

The scholarship didn’t just solidify her decision to attend UC, it became one of the most meaningful parts of her college experience. This was not only because of the financial support but also the personal connection that comes with being a scholar.

“Even just having the president walk by and know who I am means so much,” she said. “And I’ve met so many incredible people from outside UC with real-world connections. It’s helped prepare me for what comes after graduation.”

President Roth’s mentorship has also played a major role in her development.

“He’s given me advice on interviews, meeting new people, and becoming the best person I can be. It’s real-life guidance,” she said.

Studying to earn her Bachelor’s in Radiologic Science, Maddie appreciates the program’s four-year structure, a major advantage in a competitive healthcare field.

Beyond the streamlined path, Maddie values the hands-on training and real clinical experience the program builds in from day one, helping her feel confident about stepping directly into a hospital or imaging center after graduation.

“The fact that I can start here and finish here was huge for me,” she said. “I get every clinical rotation, every hour I need, and I’ll be fully prepared for my boards. It’s all mapped out. There’s no transferring, no guessing.”

For students considering UC or the Presidential Scholarship, Maddie’s advice is simple:

“Just go for it,” she said. “Try your best, be professional, and put in the work. You meet so many people along the way. I’m still friends with the people I interviewed with. It helps you build connections before you even get to campus.”
