UC Community Rolls Up Its Sleeves for Labor of Love Community Service Day
Charleston, WV – August 29, 2025— Like many schools, the University of Charleston will not hold classes on Labor Day. Unlike the others, however, the community will become the classroom as students, faculty, coaches, and staff participate in the university’s annual Labor of Love initiative.
On Monday, September 1, nearly 1,500 UC students, faculty, staff, and coaches will unite for the university’s signature day of service. This year’s Labor of Love will encompass a wide range of projects. A UC task force team organized nearly 50 community service projects – from cleanups and community beautification to meal preparation, food distribution, and outreach for those in need.
“At the University of Charleston, our mission to prepare students for lives of meaningful work, enlightened living, and community involvement is at the heart of everything we do,” explained UC President Marty Roth. “Labor of Love is more than a day of service – it’s a tradition that reflects our deep commitment to Charleston and the communities we serve. Together, we build stronger connections, meet real needs, and show what it truly means to be Charleston’s University™.”
In Charleston, UC and KRT buses will begin transporting students from campus Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. A second group will leave campus at 9:30 a.m. Several UC teams will be helping this weekend as well, including support for the Charleston Distance Run and a Sunday cleanup at the Morri Creek Watershed. The majority of service projects will take place Monday.
“Our mission and our commitment to community involvement are even more vital now when so many people are in need,” said Hallie Chillag, Assistant Professor of Social Sciences at UC, a Labor of Love organizer. “The University of Charleston is doing more projects than ever before to serve more people in more places. UC students, faculty, and staff are committed to serving others, and this day reflects that.”
The day of service will end with participants enjoying an afternoon of Lounging on the Lawn, a fun and relaxing reward for their hard work. It will take place on the riverbank lawn on the Charleston campus.
UC-Beckley students will also participate in projects organized by their program directors. Online students are encouraged to participate in community service from wherever they are.
Sponsors for the day of service include WV American Water, Pianfetti Foundation, Poca Valley Bank, and Balance Clothing Company.
