UC Offers the Community a Labor of Love
Classes at the University of Charleston will not be held on Labor Day. Instead, the community will become a classroom as students, faculty, coaches, and staff will participate in the university’s annual Labor of Love initiative.
Labor of Love will take place on Monday, September 2, Labor Day. UC and KRT buses will begin transporting students from campus at 8:00 a.m.
A UC task force team organized nearly 40 community service projects, with a few activities taking place earlier in the weekend. This year’s projects include beautification projects, packing outreach and food bags, landscaping, trail cleaning, meal preparation, cleaning headstones at Spring Hill Cemetery, a “Get Out the Vote” initiative, and more. The UC softball and women’s basketball teams are helping with the Charleston Distance Run and Children’s Race on Friday and Saturday.
The projects’ locations include CAMC Hospitality House, Elk City/West Side neighborhoods, Spring Hill Cemetery, the Morris Creek Watershed, Campbell’s Creek Park, Ruth Lawn Elementary School, Ronald McDonald House, YWCA, and Bream SHOP, as well as several other locations and beneficiaries of the day.
The day of service will end with participants enjoying an afternoon of Lounging on the Lawn, a fun and relaxing reward for their hard work.
UC—Beckley students will also participate in projects organized by their program directors. Online students are being encouraged to do community service wherever they are.
WV American Water, WVLawyers.com, Poca Valley Bank, Centurion Insurance, Pray Construction, and Komax Business Systems are sponsors for the day of service.
Labor of Love was created to support one of the pillars of the university’s mission: To educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community service.
