A UC School of Pharmacy student has been appointed to the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Council on Public Policy for 2024-25. Allison Given was selected as a student member, one of only a quarter of all student pharmacists offered this opportunity.

Leigh Briscoe-Dwyer, President of ASHP, said, “We are grateful to Allison’s commitment to the profession of pharmacy and exemplary service to ASHP. We are confident that your organization as well as ASHP, will benefit from Allison’s activities.”

The Council on Public Policy is one of five ASHP councils that make recommendations to the Board of Directors. It is concerned with ASHP professional policies related to laws and regulations that have a bearing on pharmacy practice.

The five councils are the primary bodies that initiate ASHP policies on professional issues. Policy recommendations are reviewed by the Board of Directors and, ultimately, by the House of Delegates. Councils also advise the Board on ASHP activities within their respective purviews.

ASHP is the largest association of pharmacy professionals in the United States, representing 60,000 pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians in all patient care settings, including hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and health-system community pharmacies. ASHP is the accrediting body for pharmacy residency and technician training programs and provides comprehensive resources to support pharmacy professionals through every stage of their careers.

Earlier this year, Allison Given was awarded the Johns Hopkins Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacy Internship. She was one of about 20 students who received internship opportunities from the institution.
