The University of Charleston was recognized and awarded the ESGR (Employer Support for the Guard and Reserves) “Above and Beyond” Award at the ESGR – WV annual Employer Recognition Luncheon at Stonewall Resort. The event recognizes employers for employment policies and practices that support their employees’ participation in the National Guard and Reserve.

Brian Shaw, program coordinator for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve – West Virginia, offered his congratulations: “On behalf of the ESGR-WV Executive Committee, I would like to congratulate you on your nomination and award of ESGR’s Above and Beyond Award, signifying that you are the very best that the West Virginia economy has to offer when it comes to patriotism and flexibility with your reserve component servicemember employee(s). Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Dr. Sarah Hess, Director for Business Development, Director of our MSSL program, and Associate in Workforce Leadership, was also recognized for her efforts to help military students achieve their degrees. She received the ESGR “Seven Seals” Award.

UC Strategic Leadership graduate and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Dustin Mangham, who completed his studies while being deployed most of the time, nominated both Hess in appreciation of her work and the university for its work in helping military students complete their educations.

In his nomination of Dr. Hess, he stated, “She has an impeccable spirit for soldiers who are attempting to further their education while in an active status. She always made herself available for questions or concerns, and she explained all class material flawlessly. It is my hope that ESGR will provide recognition for her efforts and her extraordinary support for military personnel.”
