Veteran's Day 2020

On this Veterans Day, we publish a letter that MG (Ret) John Barnette, Ed.D. and UC Assistant Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, sent to our students who are members of our nation’s military. We are honored to serve such an important group, helping them reach their educational and personal goals. Dr. Barnette speaks for all of us today.

Dear Veterans and Military Members of the University of Charleston,

Today, I would like to address this letter with utmost respect and gratitude as we approach Veterans Day. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the significance of the day and the immeasurable importance of our veterans and military members. Our freedom and way of life are possible because of what you and the many others before you have done and, in many cases, continue to do.

First and foremost, we would like to express our most profound appreciation for your service, sacrifices, commitment, and dedication to our country. We recognize that only a tiny percentage of individuals choose to serve and protect the rest of us, and we are forever grateful for your selflessness. Your unwavering bravery and resilience inspire us all.

We are honored that you have chosen the University of Charleston as your institution of higher education. Your presence on our campus and in our programs enriches our community and adds immeasurable value to our work and purpose. More than one-third of our students at the University are on Active Duty or are Veterans. We want you to know that we are incredibly thankful for and proud of each of you. Your many accomplishments here and before are significant.

Because of what you have done, we are committed to providing you with the best learning environment at the University of Charleston. We understand the unique challenges and experiences of being a student who has served in the military. Therefore, we are dedicated to advancing your knowledge supporting you through advising, mentoring, and other necessary supportive services as you continue your education, advance in your careers, or transition to the civilian sector.

Your presence in our classrooms brings a wealth of knowledge, perspective, and diversity that enhances the learning experience for all students. We encourage you to share your experiences and insights as they contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of our world.

On this Veterans Day, let us remember the sacrifices our veterans and military members made, both past and present. Because of your courage and dedication, we can enjoy the freedoms we hold dear. We owe you a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to each one of you. Your service to our country and your pursuit of education are testaments to your unwavering determination and resilience. We are honored to have you in our University of Charleston family.

With deepest appreciation,

John E. Barnette
