As part of its goal to prepare its students for a lifetime of community service, each year the University holds its “Labor of Love” initiative, sending UC students, faculty, and staff into the community to perform a wide range of service projects.

“Labor of Love” will take place during the Labor Day weekend, from Saturday, September 3 through Monday, September 5, 2022. Community service activities were organized by a UC task force team.

Service projects run from preparing meals and serving a pop-up picnic for Charleston’s unhoused community, to animal care at the Charleston-Kanawha Humane Society, to cleanup in various areas of the city, hat and scarf making, and more.

There is also a Family Fun Walk/Run Monday, September 5, starting at 9:00 am with wellness screenings, activities for kids, and information about UC programs offered from 8:30 – 9:00 am.

The weekend of service will end with participants enjoying an evening of Lounging on the Lawn, a fun and relaxing reward for their hard work.

UC – Beckley students will be participating in a “Plarn (plastic yarn) Project” to create hats for the homeless, and online students are being encouraged to do community service wherever they are.

“Our mission and our commitment to community involvement is especially important now when so many people are in need,” said Hallie Chillag, Assistant Professor of Social Sciences at UC. “The University of Charleston is offering more projects than ever before to help students serve our community. The enthusiastic participation tells us how UC students, staff, and faculty are committed to serving others.”

West Virginia – American Water Company will be supplying water to participants during the event. Other financial supporters include Centurion Insurance via Andy Paterno, Fifth Third Bank, Bailey Glasser LLP, ProSource, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of WV, State Farm Insurance (Elizabeth Carmichael), and Poca Valley Bank.
