UC Is First2 Network Immersion Site
High school seniors majoring in a STEM field at a WV college, and who are either a first-generation student, from a rural community, or from a group underrepresented in STEM, are eligible to be part of a unique opportunity this summer.
UC will once again be a First2 Network immersion site from August 17 – 26, 2022. Faculty Advisors Drs. Aida Jimenez, Heather Arnett, and Karen Kail will work with interns to look at the effects of long-term acid mine drainage input in riparian areas on specific biological indicators.
Participating students will move into their dorms early, get acquainted with the university spaces, meet other students and faculty, and get research experience both in the field and on campus. And rather than paying for the camp, students will receive a pay stipend for attending.
First2 Network is a National Science Foundation funded organization that works to improve STEM persistence among rural, first-generation and other underrepresented students.
UC offers other First2 programs during the academic year, including leadership and research funding and pay stipends.
