Regional Math Field Day To Take Place on Campus
Students from Four WV Counties to Compete March 1, 2022
What is the probability that 5 flips of a fair coin give exactly one head?
On March 1, 2022, students from Boone, Clay, Kanawha and Putnam counties will answer questions like this (and harder ones) as they compete at the University of Charleston in the Regional Math Field Day competition. There will be 112 students competing in this event.
Each county sends three students per grade (grades 4-9) and a high school team of 10 students, representing grades 10-12, to compete.
The 4th-9th grade students compete for individual awards and 10th-12th grade students compete for both individual awards and team awards. Individual awards are given for the top three places in each grade 4th-9th and the top 10 places in the high school (10th-12th) division. A team award is given to the county high school (10th-12th) team with the highest score on team events. Individual winners go on to compete at the State Math Field Day competition.
For more information about the event, please contact Jennifer Grimsley Hoffman, Program Director – Mathematics, University of Charleston, 304-357-4887 or jenniferhoffman@ucwv.edu.
The answer to the problem, by the way, is 5/32.
