Reference and Instruction Librarian

Job Summary:

The Reference and Instruction Librarian has primary responsibility for providing reference, instruction, and research assistance, particularly in the areas of the arts & sciences and business & leadership. He or she will serve as a liaison to these departments. Responsibilities include but are not limited to staffing the Reference Desk. Providing electronic reference, participation on faculty committees, providing administrative backup, participating in library educational programs, and instructing patrons in computer use.

The Reference and Instruction Librarian is responsible for developing instructional tools and services that will assist users to learn both the specifics of selected resources and the information-seeking strategies they will need to succeed as life-long learners.

Librarians at the University of Charleston hold faculty rank, have voting privileges at faculty meetings, and may serve on faculty committees. Participation in faculty activities is expected. This position reports to the Director of Library Services.

Skills and Requirements:

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association
Excellent reference skills
Proficiency in database searching
Strong computer skills
Effective written and oral communication skills
The ability to function flexibly in a team environment
Instructional skills to teach library use, information literacy, and critical thinking skills
