Graduate Assistant Resident Director

The University of Charleston seeks a 11 month, 25 hours per week, professional live-in Graduate Assistant Resident Director. The GA RD reports to the Residence Life Coordinator for Housing Operations and will recruit, select, train, and supervise a team of talented student Resident Assistants and maintain direct responsibility for 150-250 students.

Principal responsibilities will include staff supervision and development, residential education, community development, crisis management, enforcing policy, administration and building management, intramural activities, summer operations support, and other departmental/college-wide responsibilities. Because the GA RD is one of five staff that are the primary professional staff members available in the residence halls for student interaction, spending evening and weekend time with students is required. The GA RD will participate in a 24 hour a day, 300 days a year on-call duty rotation. Actual hours vary greatly depending upon events, emergencies, etc.


  • Full Time, live in professional staff member
  • Responsible for the daily operation of the residence hall(s)
  • Serves as an educator, helping students adjust to life at the university and in the residence halls.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation system, evening and weekend work is required
  • Respond to any student or building concern within the residence hall communities
  • Provide on-going training and development for RA’s
  • Responsible for individual bi-weekly meetings with residence hall RA staff to provide support in areas of community development, discipline, personal and academic problem-solving, support for programming and general residence hall matters.
  • Provide on-going feedback to RA’s and DA’s regarding job performance
  • Communicate and meet weekly with the Director of Residence Life
  • Provide personal assistance to the students to include advising, counseling, and discipline
  • Coordinate all procedures to ensure the effective opening and closing of the residence halls at the appropriate time of year
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life or Residence Life Coordinator for Housing Operations



  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • One to two years of residence life experience
  • Ability to work at a fast pace and handle spontaneous work demands
  • Experience working with different departments in a university setting
  • Good organizational skills and good communication skills
  • Enrolled fulltime in the Strategic Leadership or Master of Business Administration Program



  • Experience using THD, Colleague, Guardian



  • A fully furnished one-bedroom apartment, $8,500/year paid on a bi-weekly basis.
  • A meal plan of 14 Meals / week plus a $225 flex cash to be used at any dining facility on campus.
  • Tuition waiver for the University of Charleston School of Business.
