Financial Aid Counselor

JOB SUMMARY:   The Financial Aid Counselor is responsible for assisting in the overall operations of the Financial Aid Office.  The Counselor is responsible for processing student financial aid applications, answering concerns of parents and students, and performing other duties in support of the operation of Financial Aid function for the University.  This position reports to the Director of Financial Aid.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

 Provide direct, quick, accurate, and convenient service to parents and students through addressing a range of student financial aid needs which require immediate attention. This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions on an as needed basis:

  • Provide student advising regarding the entire FAFSA application, verification requirements, CFlag documentation, and eligibility requirements to receive Federal and State aid.
  • Provide customer service in person, over the phone or via email and video conferencing.
  • Prepare and award financial aid packages for online and in-seat programs.
  • Front desk support (back up for phones, email, mail, and walk-in traffic)
  • Counsel students in completing Entrance Loan Counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN).
  • Review and monitor the Transfer Monitoring List and alerts for all transfer students.
  • Advise students and parents on available resources outside of Federal and State aid including private loans and outside scholarships.
  • Process Parent PLUS and Grad PLUS Loans.
  • Certification of alternative loans using ELM.
  • Process state scholarship and grant awards, including verifying program eligibility rosters.
  • Assist in monitoring College Work Study and Nursing Loans.
  • Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements.
  • Assist with NCAA Compliance Assistance software
  • Work cooperatively with other offices on campus particularly Admissions and the Athletic Departments.
  • Participate in University activities, e.g., Experience UC Day, Maroon & Gold Day, and other financial aid events.
  • Assist in the annual University audit as needed.
  • Assist students in accessing data in the Colleague System
  • Perform related duties as necessary and as assigned.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 2 years direct Financial Aid experience or 4 or more years Accounting or other relevant experience
  • Experience with Colleague is helpful
  • Applicable experience and Assistant competencies will be considered
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the various customer bases, e.g., students, staff, faculty, and external contacts
  • Ability to utilize a personal computer and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Results-oriented interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of general office procedures
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Flexible, resourceful, willing to learn\cross-train
  • Must be a team player
  • Other duties assigned
