Exercise Science Instructor and Athletic Trainer

  • Appointment Length:  10 months; August 1 – May 31
  • Title:                            Instructor and Athletic Trainer
  • Rank:                          Instructor (or commensurate with experience)
  • Clinical Assignment:  One sport (currently assigned in the spring semester)
  • Courses:                     As assigned in Exercise Science or Health Sciences
  • Leadership ability as an academician and scholar
  • Implementation of outcomes-based curriculum within own professional practice
  • Demonstration of the capacity to provide support and assistance around outcomes-based learning to faculty colleagues within the department
  • Demonstration of the capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues toward institutional, school, and departmental goals.



  • Full-time faculty member in Exercise Science, housed in School of Health Sciences
  • Content areas:  as assigned (teaching track – 30 credit hours per year with release time for athletics)
  • Demonstrate a commitment to clinical instruction and teaching excellence and service, meeting minimum standards set forth in the Faculty Appraisal System and the Personnel Action File (PAF) document (e.g. faculty/staff development opportunities, committee service)
  • Advise students in progression to graduation and graduate school application
  • Participate in student research, independent studies, and case studies
  • Participate in recruitment activities and various committees at the department, division, and university levels
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively within the department
  • Serve as a Faculty Advisor for Exercise Science Students.
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviors
  • Assist Exercise Science Program Director with maintaining department records and analyzing program learning outcomes
  • Provide quality athletic training services to athletes, including, but not limited to, prevention, evaluation, assessment, rehabilitation, conditioning, referral, and documentation for UC intercollegiate athletics
  • Demonstrate compliance with the Athletic Training Policy & Procedure Manual
  • Maintain and update student-athlete medical records in a timely manner
  • Travel to post season tournament, other travel pending academic responsibilities
  • Remain current in best practices and current issues/trends within the profession
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively within the department
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviors
  • Perform other duties as outlined by the Coordinator of Clinical Services or Department Chair
  • Serves as the discipline consultant for assigned students
  • Maintains scheduled office hours to be available to students
  • Supervises the gathering and dissemination of information for students about graduate and professional schools and careers and assists students in pursuing these goals
  • Supports program-related student clubs and organizations
  • Participates in the recruitment and retention of students for the program
  • Serves on department, school, and university committees
  • Participates in University functions such as registration, convocations, commencement, faculty meetings, etc.
  • Assists program colleagues in using the faculty evaluation process to stimulate professional growth
  • Continues professional development in technology, pedagogy, and scholarship
  • Employs professional development activities to advance clinical practice, teaching and learning, and the scholarship of discovery
  • Assists with keeping programs credential files current and reflective of continued professional growth and activities
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean



  • Shall possess proficiency in, but not limited to, the areas of curriculum design, program administration/evaluation, instruction and counseling.
  • Shall document a master’s degree from an accredited institution in an accepted area.  (Athletic training, Exercise Science or related field)
  • Must be licensed as an Athletic Trainer, or eligible for licensure, in the state of West Virginia.
  • Must be a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association
  • Must be a certified Athletic Trainer in good standing with the Board of Certification
