The University of Charleston seeks candidates for a 9-month full-time position in Chemistry. The University of Charleston is a small private university located in Charleston, West Virginia, a community of approximately 50,000 in a metro area of 250,000, located in the south-central part of the state.
Charleston, the state capital, is within a five-hour drive of several major cities. Charleston’s Yeager Airport is served by four airlines that have direct flights to many major cities. In addition to an abundance of cultural and outdoor opportunities, Charleston’s general cost of living index (per ACCRA) is significantly below the national average. The University of Charleston is known for its innovative curriculum and emphasis on student success. The Chemistry program is within the Department of Natural Sciences & Mathematics and offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, a Chemistry-Biology Dual Bachelor of Science, and a concentration in Data Analytics (for BS Chemistry candidates).
The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Chemistry by August 2020. Candidates with a specialization and/or postdoctoral experience in Analytical Chemistry and/or Environmental Chemistry are preferred. The candidate will be involved in teaching General Chemistry to science majors, as well as two upper level analytical courses and a portion of a CURE (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience) course focused on environmental challenges. The required teaching load for a faculty member is 12 credit hours per semester (with an expectation of scholarship).
Responsibilities of the position:
- Teaching General Chemistry I and II lectures and labs (with help from other faculty), Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Analysis, and a portion of a CURE course (in collaboration with Chemistry and Biology faculty)
- Guiding senior research projects
- Academic advising and mentoring
- Participation in faculty governance
- Help in the recruiting of students
- Participation in assessment of program outcomes
- Maintenance of analytical instrumentation
