AI and Healthcare: What Patients, Providers, and Leaders Need to Know

Artificial intelligence is moving quickly from novelty to practical tools across health care and everyday life. Hospitals, physician practices, specialty providers, long-term care providers, behavioral health organizations, insurers, universities, technology companies, employers, researchers, and patients are all exploring and using AI in different ways. These tools are already being used to draft and summarize information, support clinical documentation, make health care decisions, collect and analyze patient data and medical information, assist with scheduling, billing, and operations, support research, and help patients better understand health-related information.
This presentation will provide a practical overview and background on AI, generative AI, and large language models, with a focus on how AI is changing health care for providers, organizations, patients, and communities. The presentation will also address the rapidly changing legal, ethical, and operational landscape surrounding AI in health care. The session will explore both the promise and the risks of AI in health care, including improved efficiency, better access to information, patient engagement, patient trust, clinical support, privacy, confidentiality, accuracy, bias, cybersecurity, vendor oversight, organizational governance, and the continued importance of human judgment.
The session will seek to engage those in the audience who work in the healthcare industry in a dialogue of how they are currently using AI and a practical discussion around the rewards, risks, and organizational changes occurring as a result of AI implementation. If time allows, the session may include a live demonstration of tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Google NotebookLM, and other AI platforms, along with practical examples of how the healthcare industry is using AI tools and technology.
