The resident will have sufficient exposure to community pharmacies already engaging in innovative practices yet have ample opportunity to assist in the design and implementation of similar patient care services at other sites. Development of basic skills in practice-based research and academics will be a component of the residency experience. The residency will be tailored to complement and augment the background and career goals of the successful applicant.
The Fruth Pharmacy / UCSOP PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program will provide the resident the opportunity to be involved with MTM programs, medication distribution and use process, immunization services, wellness programs, and disease state prevention programs. The primary site of practice will be located in Nitro, WV, but opportunities for practice development may be found throughout the different Fruth locations and at UCSOP. The resident will also receive a teaching certificate through the University of Charleston, where they will be actively involved in academic pharmacy. The resident will also be expected to complete a community-pharmacy based research project and submit the project for publication. This program will provide flexibility for the resident to pursue interests and develop skill sets in areas in which the resident has personal interests and career goals.
Fruth is a regional chain of pharmacies providing care to patients in West Virginia and Ohio. Fruth Pharmacy was founded by Jack Fruth in 1952 as a single, hometown pharmacy in Point Pleasant, WV. Fruth now consists of 27 stores and is growing, but still maintains the values of being “Your Hometown, Family Pharmacy.”

The PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program conducted by Fruth Pharmacy and University of Charleston School of Pharmacy in Charleston, WV has an accreditation status with ASHP in partnership with American Pharmacists Association (APhA).
