Message from the President:

UC is On the Move! Athletics and academics are both getting better each year.  Our student athletes benefit from our growth and make it happen.

The mission of the University is to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement. UC is a national leader in outcomes-based education and student learning assessment. We offer a learning environment that requires students to engage in active learning practices with the support of a qualified faculty, state-of-the-art technology, and improved physical facilities.

This year’s full-time enrollment is the highest in 37 years. U.S. News & World Report identified UC as the best baccalaureate institution in West Virginia, and the Princeton Review made UC one of only six schools in the country to be added to their list of best colleges this year.

In May, 2010, the University will graduate its first-ever class of pharmacy doctors from its School of Pharmacy and its first-ever class of Master of Business Administration and Leadership students from its Graduate School of Business.  Many of these students began their studies as freshmen at UC and followed a fast-track program to graduate one or two years ahead of students at other institutions.

The University is not finished growing. To accommodate its expanding enrollment, the University just completed a $21.0 million residence hall and parking facility.   The University is also raising funds to provide a contemporary sports and fitness center to accommodate intercollegiate basketball and volleyball and to provide recreational facilities for all students to use.

Athletics plays an important role in the life of the University and in accomplishing our mission. Teamwork, fitness, community involvement, competition, initiative, dependability, and leadership are some of the many life-long learning opportunities provided by athletics.

The University of Charleston is truly committed to providing the best possible experience for our students.  We welcome the involvement of the Charleston community in our activities and are pleased that we can serve the community and our many friends both near and far.

Sincerely,

Dr. Edwin H. Welch
President
