It was difficult to believe at the end of the 2008-09 year the Golden Eagles had amassed a record of 26 wins against only 7 losses. At the beginning of the season, it was only a dream for this team to find their way to the top of the conference. Apparently the dream was enough to fuel them to be named the WVIAC season champions as well as the tournament champions.
As the 2009-2010 year begins, there is a new group of dreamers—players with big hearts and huge hopes. Among that group of players there has to be somebody willing to fill the void of Jihan Williams, an Honorable-Mention All-American, who ended her career with over 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 points. There also must be a player willing to step forward to fill the leadership shoes of Veronica Carman, an athlete who was so good at her role her teammates affectionately named her “Leader.” Finally, there must be a replacement for the heart and hustle of Jennifer DeMeyer.
There are a few athletes who have the ability to step into the rebounding role. Tarenna Dixon, a quick and powerful athlete, showed evidence of her prowess on the boards last season when she grabbed 92 offensive rebounds. Moneka Slaughter has excellent strength and with increased confidence from her work during preseason has the potential to own the paint. Tiana Beatty while slight in build has incredible leaping ability and can out leap most 6’0” players.
As always, the scoring role will be a role divided by the entire team but there are several players who have the skill necessary to put up solid numbers on a daily basis. Kaitlyn Arick has excellent three point range, a killer jump shot and can post up in the low block if needed. Lindsey Kentner owns one of the quickest shot releases in the conference. In addition to her ability to catch and shoot, she has added a deadly one-legged step back. Lisanne Comeau and Ali Tobias are phenomenal catch and shoot players who can also pull-up for the jumper. Tarenna Dixon can post in the low block, penetrate or shoot the outside shot while Tiana Beatty can drive to the basket quicker than most guards can think.
Two players have stepped forward to fill the leadership role. Kaitlyn Arick and Lindsey Kentner both witnessed the power of positive leadership provided by Veronica Carman. They have already continued displaying positive energy toward their teammates, offering vocal support as well as constructive criticism when needed.
Heart and hustle are always two characteristics the Golden Eagles are proud to own. While each of the players buy into this trait, there is one who shows determination even when she is not on the court. Her desire to be the best is evident every single day she shows up for practice. Julianne Smith is an athlete who is driven by her passion for the game.
Finally, the Golden Eagles are eager to display the talent of their freshmen. Chrissy Keir, a small but feisty point guard, is sure to show her vision and court moxie early in the year. Tianni Kelly, an overlooked player in her high school, has the speed and quickness to get out early on the fast break. The third freshman, Emma Riegert, is a quick study on the court and is certain to be valuable defensively.
As always, the Golden Eagles are eager for the challenges the year will bring to them. They believe they can achieve great things this season and that belief is the fuel needed to take them to their dreams.
