Residence Life and Housing
Residence Life and Housing at the University of Charleston is committed to supporting the academic mission of the University through purposeful interaction with students. The Residence Life staff is committed to the social, emotional, and academic development of students. Our priority is to provide a safe, secure, and comfortable living space that fosters community and allows for the development of responsible communities that encourage and appreciate diversity. It is our goal to assist in the education of students, allowing each student to develop character, knowledge, integrity, tolerance, and civic responsibility.
Residence Life Staff
Each residence hall is staffed with professional staff and students to facilitate the development and maintenance of a quality living environment.
Resident Assistant (RA)
A Resident Assistant (RA) is assigned to each section on the residence hall. RAs are talented and motivated student leaders who are selected to assist students with various problems and concerns. RAs serve a vital role in the development of community.
Resident Director (RD)
The RD is a live-in professional staff person who is responsible for the total operation of the residence hall. Each RD serves as an advisor to the residence hall council, promotes educational and social programming, serves as a personal and University resource to the students, and supervises the student staff members.
Director of Residence Life and Housing
The Director is the University administrator responsible for the leadership and overall operation of Residence Life and Housing.
Residence Life Basics
UC is home to approximately 600 residential students living in four co-educational residence halls. The card access system requires a student ID card for entry into the residence halls.
The Residence Life staff - undergraduate Resident Assistants (RAs), graduate Residence Director (RD), and the Director of Residence Life and Housing, work to facilitate a community environment which maximizes each student's academic and personal development. Resident students are challenged and supported by staff members and peers through planned activities, compassionate care, referrals for needed counseling services (i.e. personal counseling), disciplinary intervention, and spontaneous interactions.
