University of Charleston School of Pharmacy Students Join National Challenge

Charleston, W.Va. - To improve prescription medication adherence in the Kanawha Valley, the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy has joined the national Script Your Future Challenge and will host a free community health fair on Tuesday, February 12, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Riggleman Hall Rotunda on the University’s Kanawha City campus. Attendees will be able to receive several free screenings, including: glucose, cholesterol, bone density and more.

The challenge, formally known as the 2013 Medication Adherence Team Challenge, is a month-long competition among student pharmacists and other health care professional students across the country. In addition to the health fair, UC School of Pharmacy students have planned eight other activities to help raise awareness of the importance for patients with chronic illnesses to take their medication as prescribed and follow the guidelines. Those events include:

Feb. 7 - Script Your Future informational booth at UC basketball game vs. Concord

Feb. 8 - Script Your Future Cartoon Strip Contest

Feb. 12 - Script Your Future Community Health Fair in the Riggleman Hall Rotunda

Feb. 16 - Script Your Future Informational Session, sponsored by Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) and American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) (location TBA)

Feb. 17 - Script Your Future Informational Session and Brown Bag Event, sponsored by Christian Pharmacist Fellowship International (CPFI) at Emmanuel Baptist Church

Feb. 19 - Script Your Future informational booth at the TeenExpo, South Charleston

Feb. 22 - Script Your Future informational booth in collaboration with the PharmUC Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Screen, sponsored by PharmUC and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA)

Feb. 27 - Script Your Future informational booth at the Charleston Silver Sneaker event, sponsored by Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA)

The students are supported by the Script Your Future campaign, a national coalition of more than 130 public and private stakeholder organizations, led by the National Consumers League (NCL).  The campaign provides tools to help patients and health care professionals better communicate about ways to improve medication adherence. TheAmerican Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation, the American Medical Association (AMA), and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) are sponsors of the Challenge and campaign, and are leading efforts to engage the next generation of health care professionals in the campaign.

The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy enrolled its first students in 2006, and received full accreditation when the first class graduated in May, 2010. Each year, the school educates over 300 student pharmacists in a new, technology-filled building. The program is known for the close cooperation between students and faculty, an emphasis on professionalism and advocacy, and PharmUC, an on-campus provider of medication therapy management and chronic disease education services for patients.
