Release Date:  Thursday, January 31, 2013

CHARLESTON, W.Va.  – The University of Charleston’s three new locations that opened this January have helped UC record its largest total enrollment in 30 years and the second largest full-time enrollment in the university's history. University President Ed Welch today announced a full-time enrollment for Spring 2013 of 1,669, and a total enrollment of 1,884.

“We are extremely pleased with the growth in enrollment brought on by our recent expansion,” said Dr. Welch. “Our focus now is to build on this base to serve additional students at each of our locations. We want to assure that each student experiences the high-quality courses and programs that have garnered the University a national reputation for preparing graduates to be successful in their jobs and leaders in their communities."

UC’s full-time enrollment surpasses 1972’s mark of 1,567 as the second largest on record. At the present time, UC has 1,367 students taking courses in Charleston and 517 taking courses in its regional network at UC-Beckley, UC-Martinsburg and UC-Net (online).

UC-Net is currently accepting applications for courses beginning March 11. Students will be able to start four bachelor’s (accounting, business administration, organizational leadership and psychology) and two master’s programs (forensic accounting and strategic leadership), as well as take prerequisite courses for health science programs like radiologic science, occupational therapy assistant and diagnostic medical sonography.

The 2012-13 academic year marks UC’s 125th anniversary as an academic institution. UC was founded in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary, renamed Morris Harvey College in 1901, moved to Charleston in 1935 and was renamed the University of Charleston in 1978.
