Release Date:  Tuesday, July 09, 2013

Beckley, W.Va. (July 9, 2013) – University of Charleston President Ed Welch and New River Community and Technical College President L. Marshall Washington today signed an articulation agreement, which allows New River students to easily transition into select bachelor degree programs at UC after completing an associate degree. The signing took place today at the UC-Beckley Learning Resource Center in Beckley, W.Va.

“Today’s signing opens new doors for students in Southern West Virginia to continue their higher education careers,” said Dr. Welch. “This is a new and clear path for New River students to stretch their career goals and earning potential by transitioning easily into UC’s four-year programs after completing their associate degrees.”

The articulation agreement will enable New River students the ability to better plan their academic careers and minimize credit loss when transferring to UC to earn their baccalaureate degrees. Transfer students will be eligible to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in just two years, and in many cases move directly into one of UC’s graduate programs, such as the Master of Business Administration and Leadership, Master of Strategic Leadership or Master of Forensic Accounting.

"We are very excited about this opportunity and hope that the signing of this articulation agreement with the University of Charleston will be the first of many partnerships between our two institutions," said Dr. Washington.

New River students who serve in the West Virginia National Guard and transfer to UC will be eligible for the Golden Eagle Scholarship. The scholarship will provide up to $9,000 per year in tuition assistance, while the State of West Virginia provides a $6,500 educational stipend to National Guard members. The scholarship aid from UC will mean that members of the National Guard can attend UC at a very affordable cost.

In addition to the National Guard scholarship, the University of Charleston participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which provides tuition benefits to veterans. UC is recognized as Military Friendly School, which recognizes the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country.
