CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Enactus (formerly SIFE) team captured its fourth consecutive regional championship on Wed., March 20, 2013 in Charlotte, N.C.
Enactus teams at colleges across the U.S. work throughout the year with businesses and organizations to improve their local communities and then prepare a 17-minute recap to present at regional competitions. The top teams from each region are chosen by a panel of judges and move on to compete at the Enactus Regional Expo May 21-23, in Kansas City, Mo.
“Our team really stepped up and did an exceptional job at regionals,” said UC School of Business Dean, and Enactus team co-advisor, Scott Bellamy. “Our students worked tirelessly this year to better the lives of people across the Kanawha Valley. Being recognized for their efforts by business leaders in the region means a lot to the team.”
UC was one of 15 teams at the regional competition in Charlotte and advanced out of League 1 to nationals along with College of Charleston and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Other teams in League 1 included Elon University and Winston-Salem State University.
UC Enactus completed over 2,000 hours of community service hours so far this year. The team is conducting 14 sustainable projects and presented on three at regionals: mentoring over 50 students and upgrading facilities at the St. Albans Boys & Girls Club, receiving grant money to install water bottle refill stations on UC’s campus to cut plastic disposal by over 18,000 pounds annually, and providing business and marketing support for the Quarrier St. Diner.
UC was also recognized for being a part of “Enactus 4.0,” which awards exemplary teams for quality educational programs, success in Enactus and long-term sustainability to improve the quality of life and standard of living for others during the 2012-13 academic year.
