Honorary Degrees Presented at Commencement

Charleston, W.Va. - Three notable West Virginians were honored at the University of Charleston Commencement ceremony Sunday, May 4th. Beckley business icon Tracy Warren Hylton, II, Artistic Director Nina Denton Pasinetti and developer/entrepreneur LeRoy M. Rashid, all received honorary degrees for their contributions to the state and its citizens.

Hylton was recognized for his achievements within the state as well as his support of the Hylton Family Endowed Scholarship at the University of Charleston- Beckley. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. Hylton has been at the helm of several businesses related to mining, excavating, reclamation, construction and real estate. He is also a partner in several automobile businesses, and involved in many community organizations. Tracy Hylton 
Pasinetti, a graduate of Morris Harvey (now University of Charleston) received a Doctor of Fine Arts degree, and was recognized for her support of the arts community and education. She serves as the Stage and Artistic Director of the Charleston Light Opera Guild, and was also recently honored with the 2014 Governor’s Arts Award, Artist of the Year. She has with the Charleston Light Opera Guild for the past 43 years, first as choreographer and later as stage director/choreographer and artistic director.  Nina Pasinetti 
LeRoy Rashid, along with his brother Dr. Richard C. Rashid, developed and built what is now the Holiday Inn & Suites Charleston West and Wingate by Wyndham hotels in South Charleston, the Hampton Inn Southridge, and purchased the Bollinger Field, now Southridge Center. Rashid and his brother donated the 170 year old historic Chilton House to the University of Charleston in 1998. For his support of the University, along with numerous other achievements and contributions to the Charleston area, Rashid was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws. (Rashid was unable to attend the ceremony. His wife, Claudette, accepted his degree for him.)  Claudette Rashid
