University of Charleston Decides Against Paintsville Pharmacy Branch

Release Date:  Friday, April 27, 2012

Charleston, W.Va. – The Board of Trustees of the University of Charleston decided today not to open a branch of its pharmacy school in Paintsville, Kentucky.

“We are very grateful for the way all parties have worked together to explore this possibility,” said University of Charleston President Edwin Welch.  “It has been an open and thorough process.  Ultimately, we have concluded that it is not in the best interests of the institution to proceed at this time.”

The decision brings four months of scrutiny to a close.  In January of this year, the University of Charleston and Midway College signed a letter of intent outlining a proposal for the West Virginia school to open a branch of its popular pharmacy school at the Midway College Paintsville campus.  The agreement provided for a due diligence period, which expired in late February, and the university has continued to talk with interested parties and run projections as it assessed the costs and benefits of the potential program.
