CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second consecutive year the University of Charleston Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was named a Regional Champion at the SIFE USA Regional Competition held in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday, March 21, 2011.
“This championship was truly a testament to the quality of our team,” said UC SIFE Advisor Briana Cicero-Johns. “Our students worked very hard all year in the classroom and in the community. Our presentation on Monday was a culmination of those efforts.”
UC’s SIFE team delivered a 24-minute multimedia presentation documenting their service on campus and in the community over the past year. Some of those projects included: teaching financial literacy and success skills to residents at the Brookside Family Center homeless shelter, hosting a business ethics case competition for eight West Virginia high schools, and collecting over 7,000 pounds of nonperishable food for the Union Mission.
Twenty-seven teams from around the Southeast were placed in five leagues at the competition. This year, UC’s league included Lander, College of Charleston, Gardner-Webb and Claflin.
The team will now proceed to the national SIFE Exposition in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 10 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
“Our goal at the beginning of the school year was to finish in the top-40 nationally and I think we are on track to accomplish that,” said Cicero-Johns.
