Borrowing & Renewals Users may borrow materials by bringing the items with their valid, bar-coded U.C. I.D. card to the Circulation Desk. Material is checked out for a three-week period and may be renewed one time for another three weeks, unless someone else has requested the item. You may renew an item in person or by telephone. As in most libraries, periodicals (magazines and journals) and reference materials do not leave the library. Photocopiers, however, are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Photocopies are 10 cents per page; change can be provided. Printing from library terminals is free for UC students for their first 600 pages per year; otherwise, the photocopy charge of 10 cents per page applies. Users who have overdue material or unpaid fines will not be permitted to borrow materials.
Interlibrary Loan Policy Materials not owned by the Schoenbaum Library can be ordered from other libraries or from commercial document suppliers for UC faculty, staff, and students. The fee for photocopied material is 10 cents per page. Refunds will be made for items that can't be supplied. Requests are generally processed within 24 hours of receipt, and can usually be expected to arrive in this library within 7-10 days. Turn-around time is, however, controlled by the lending library, so don't leave your requests until the last minute. For the convenience of our off-campus students and faculty, online Interlibrary Loan forms are available electronically for book requests as well as for journal article photocopies.
Alliance Cards UC students and faculty may obtain an Alliance borrowers card from the Circulation Desk. Since 1997 this inter-institutional card provides limited borrowing privileges at the following libraries: WVU-Morgantown and WVU-Charleston Division Medical Libraries as well as libraries at West Virginia State College and WVU-Tech. Details can be provided by Circulation Desk personnel.
Reciprocal Borrowing Procedure at Other Participating Libraries The Schoenbaum Library is a participant in the Reciprocal Borrowing program administered by the PALINET consortium. This program enables our UC-affiliated users to go in person to other participating libraries to borrow materials directly without ILL request. Eligible users include faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, professional academic personnel with faculty status, university officers and staff. The PALINET Reciprocal Forms are available at the Circulation Desk and will require identification as well as the librarian's signature.
Research Help
As always, a professional librarian is always available for assistance in locating resources or answering questions during all hours the library is open. Reference help is also available via email and live chat.
Information Literacy / Classroom Instruction Faculty (or students) may schedule group or individual instruction in the use of the library and its resources by contacting the Director of Library Services, 357-4918 or the Reference Librarian at 357-4779. You may also use the online Instruction Session Request Form.
Reserve Shelves
Faculty can place library or personally owned items on Reserve in the library. The Instructor determines the length of the check-out period (i.e., one to three days), or if the item must be used only within the library. A faculty member should bring material to the Library Circulation Desk along with a completed Reserve Item Request Form. Users must present a valid UC I.D. card to access Reserve material, even if it is going to be photocopied or used within the Library. (A note to Instructors: all items are removed from reserve at the end of each semester. Exceptions can be made for certain items that are needed each year.)
Wireless Laptops in the Library In addition to the availability of active network outlets for users with network-enabled laptops of their own, wireless laptops are available for use on any of the floors within the library. This may be especially helpful for students working in groups at tables where network access may be unavailable. Please see the loan policy for details. The library has no telephone outlets for dial-up purposes.
Group Study Rooms Two group study rooms are available on the 3rd floor and four are available on the 4th floor. All are equipped to view any assigned videotapes. Remote controls are located at the Circulation Desk and need to be checked out. Each room is equipped with a whiteboard; markers are available at the Circulation Desk. Network-accessible ports are marked for laptop use. These rooms cannot be reserved except under special circumstances as required by faculty. These rooms are intended as space for groups of students working together or students who must view videotapes as part of a course of study. They are not intended as private study rooms for the use of individuals. If one student is occupying a study room needed by a group of two or more, or if no other room is available for the viewing of a videotape, the single student should temporarily relinquish the group study room. We appreciate your cooperation in honoring the above priority, and we'll be glad to assist individual users in finding an alternative "quiet area". Absolutely no food is permitted anywhere within the library as it attracts tiny pests. This is especially true in the group study rooms. Drinks with a secure lid only are permitted.
Diskettes & Transparencies
Blank diskettes ($0.75), CD-Rs or CD-RWs ($1.25), and transparencies ($0.25) are available at the Circulation Desk.
USB Memory Keys Often called "portable hard drives", "memory sticks", or "flash memory", these innovative storage devices are highly recommended as they are much less likely to fail than diskettes. The Library has these for sale when available at a reasonable cost.
Printing At the present time, the University provides each student with 600 pages of free printing per year. We remind students to print only what is needed for UC classes and assignments and to refrain from printing unnecessary material. Also, if you must print PowerPoint slides, please use a six-slides to a page format. Overly large print jobs tie up the printers and are a barrier to the work of other students. Students will need to request that print jobs exceeding twenty pages be released at the circulation desk. Scanner Station Located in the Reference Room, this station is equipped with a photo scanner and a flatbed document scanner.
