This extensive collection of material related to the office of President of the United States was used by historian and political scientist James David Barber in the preparation of his books about the American presidency and the American political process. These include such titles as Choosing the President (1974), The Lawmakers (1965), Power in Committees (1966), Politics by Humans (1988), The Book of Democracy (1995), and several editions of the standard political science text The Presidential Character. The collection also includes titles related to his interest in the issue of human rights.
The collection was given by Dr. Barber to the University of Charleston in 1995. The 400 plus volumes include many reader's proof copies of volumes Dr. Barber was asked to review.
