MBAL Frequently Asked Questions

When do classes start?
Classes for first-year MBAL students begin August 16, 2010. Classes for returning MBAL students begin August 25, 2010. 

What are the requirements for application?
To be considered for admission, you will need to complete our online application. 

You may do so online or by mail. Official transcripts of all undergraduate work must be forwarded to us directly from your undergraduate institution(s) in a sealed envelope. A minimum grade point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) is required. In addition to the application form and transcript(s), you must also submit a personal statement. Personal statements should be no longer than four (4) pages in length and address issues related to professional and/or personal accomplishments and aspirations. Prior to final acceptance, a personal interview must be scheduled. Your application and transcripts should be in file in our office at the time the interview is scheduled. At present the GMAT is not required.

When can I apply?
You may submit an application any time. Due to our small class size, we encourage early application.

May I submit my application if I have not taken the GMAT and/or TOEFL?
Yes. We do not require the GMAT exam. We require a TOEFL if you reside in a country where English is not commonly spoken and if none of your undergraduate coursework was in English.

Do you offer an Executive MBA?
The Graduate School of Business at the University of Charleston offers an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) for working professionals. The program is offered on the weekend. See the complete information on our EMBA

Is your program accredited?
The University of Charleston is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Do you offer specialization in your program?
No.  We offer a general MBA with emphases on entrepreneurship, communication, and global commerce.

Do you accept transfer credits?
No. All graduate coursework must be completed in residence at the University of Charleston.

What is the cost of tuition?
Tuition for the 2010–2011 academic year is $18,000. Summer term 2011 tuition for the international study practicum is $6,500.

Is financial aid available?
Graduate student loans are available from a variety of sources. UC does not currently offer graduate assistant positions or other forms of aid. Please see our financial aid page for additional information.

Is financial aid available to international students?
International students may receive financial aid only if they are eligible for aid from the US federal government.

Should I register for my undergrad classes even though I am applying for grad school acceptance?
Yes. If you are admitted to the MBAL program, we will assist you at that time with registering for graduate courses.

If I receive a scholarship my first year, will it automatically renew for the second year? 
No. You must complete a FAFSA form each year.

When do I apply for the FAFSA, and how often will I be required to complete one?
(FAFSA — Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Students being considered for financial aid must complete the application procedure every year. Documents which must be submitted include the University of Charleston Financial Aid Application, the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), and a copy of the student's and/or parents' previous year’s tax returns. All application materials must be received by March 1 for full consideration for the following academic year. Any applications received after the March 1 deadline will be given consideration only if funds are available. West Virginia applicants must file the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 for consideration for the West Virginia Higher Education Grant and the Promise Scholarship. Academic awards may have earlier deadlines.

If I've been denied for financial aid, may I appeal the decision?
No. Financial aid decisions cannot be appealed.

Where is the Graduate School of Business located?
The Graduate School of Business is located in the business district of downtown Charleston. We are housed on the second floor of the Equities House, a professional building located at 900 Virginia Street, East, Charleston, WV 25301.
