Resident Director

The Resident Director position is a professional staff position within the Office of Student Life. The Residence Director will be responsible for all aspects of the residential community in their assigned residence hall. This includes hiring/recruiting, training, and supervising staff and student leaders; implementing intentional programming in the residence hall that coincides with the Residence Life Learning Outcomes model of programming; and developing meaningful relationships with students, staff, administration, and faculty to help carry out the missions of the Department of Residence Life, the Division of Student Affairs, and the University of Charleston.  

Position Overview

  • Coordinates all building and community aspects of a residence hall; 
  • Develops a student community that is academically and socially stimulating;
  • Initiates and assists with planning and organizing community development activities to promote a positive living/learning environment that is conducive to student success;
  • Assists in the recruitment, selection and training of paraprofessional staff (resident assistants and work studies);
  • Assists in the recruitment, selection and training of part-time staff (desk assistants and shuttle driver);
  • Supervises and evaluates staff including 4-9 resident assistants, 2-5 work-study students, and 1-2 part-time employees;
  • Facilitates weekly Resident Assistant staff meetings and tri-weekly one on one meetings to provide leadership and development;
  • Advises residents on social, behavioral and academic concerns;
  • Confronts and discusses behavioral problems and identifies necessary behavioral changes;
  • Assists in conducting judicial and disciplinary hearings;
  • Assists in the development of educational sanctioning for students involved in a student expectations and accountability violation;
  • Prepares correspondences, reports, and maintains appropriate hall records as required or requested;
  • Assists in the room and board assignment process for all returning students, including notification of assignments, and entering of data on the Colleague System;
  • Facilitates all room changes and paperwork;
  • Participate in a weekly Residence Life staff meeting, monthly one on one meeting with Director of Residence Life and bi-weekly Student Life Division staff meetings;
  • aintain office hours in both the Office of Student Life and in their assigned residence hall office;
  • Conduct monthly health and safety inspections in each room/bathroom in their assigned residence hall;
  • Serves on committees and planning groups as requested; 
  • Participates in a weekly 24/7 on duty rotation for all residence halls to ensure that all residential facilities are safe living/learning environments, responds to student requests, crisis situations, and calls from the Office of Safety and Security at non-traditional working hours;
  • Assists with New Student Orientation at the beginning of each academic year;
  • Assists the Director of Student Activities with planned programs during academic year;
  • Works with the Office of Facility Services to ensure the maintenance and custodial services of the residence hall are maintained;
  • Serves as the supervisor for a collateral position as assigned by the Director of Residence Life, including but not limited to:  Residence Hall Association and National Residence Hall Honorary Association, Student Shuttle Service, Co-Advisor for Greek Council, Diversity Programming Coordinator, Intramurals Director and Dorm Wars;
  • Effectively advance the mission of the University of Charleston, the Office of Student Life, and the Department of Residence Life through role modeling, positive relationships, campus visibility, excellent communication and follow-up.

Other Duties

The Resident Director reports to the Director of Residence Life and may be assigned special projects that will forward the work of the Office of Student Life and/or the university community.

Education Requirement

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field preferred with two years of Residence Life experience, professional or paraprofessional, or a bachelor’s degree, with at least one year of residence life experience in a professional setting
  • Strong administrative skills, attention to detail and communication skills
  • Interpersonal and supervisory skills
  • Experience working in an institution of higher education is preferred
