Resident Director

The Resident Director is responsible for all aspects of the residential communities in which they are placed, Ratrie Hall, Cox Hall, Brotherton Hall, Middle Hall or East Apartments. This includes hiring/recruiting, training, and supervising staff and student leaders; implementing intentional programming in the Residence Hall and abroad that coincides with the Student Life Learning Outcomes model of programming; and developing meaningful relationships with students, staff, administration, and faculty to help carry out the missions of the Department of Residence Life, the Division of Student Affairs, and the University of Charleston. 

Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Assist in training Resident Assistants throughout academic year
  • Supervise Resident Assistants in your Hall
  • Hire, train, and supervise Desk Assistants
  • Facilitate weekly RA staff meeting
  • Facilitate tri-weekly one-on-one meeting with each RA in your Residence Hall
  • Participate in judicial affairs, including but not limited to sending hearing letters, investigating incident reports, holding conferences, and creating personalized and intentional sanctions
  • Maintain accurate student records including, not limited to, key distribution, judicial affairs, room changes, retention
  • Monitor facility conditions and make recommendations
  • Facilitate student room changes throughout the year
  • Develop a positive relationships with student body and university personnel
  • Participate in On Call rotation system
  • Participate in weekly Residence Life meeting
  • Participate in Student Life Staff meeting
  • Participate in a monthly one on one meeting with Director of Residence Life
  • Supervise the implementation of hall/ Residence Life sponsored campus programming that coincides with departmental programming model
  • Participate/Facilitate (rotating basis) professional staff development
  • Participate in monthly Student Life meeting
  • Effectively advance the mission of the University of Charleston, the Office of Student Life, and the Department of Residence Life through role modeling, positive relationships, campus visibility, excellent communication and follow-up, and academic success at the graduate level
  • Pursue graduate studies by remaining enrolled fulltime in a graduate program of your choice in the state of WV
  • Maintain regular office hours in the Student Life Office and your Residence Hall Office each week
  • Each Resident Director will be assigned one collateral assignment within the Student Life office.
  • The Resident Director reports to the Director of Residence Life and may be assigned special projects that will forward the work of the Office of Student Life and/or the university community.

Education Requirement

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree and be admitted into a fulltime graduate studies program (at any West Virginia College or University) and remain enrolled fulltime during their time of employment.  During enrollment in a college or university Resident Director’s must maintain a “B” average in their course work.  It is also recommended that applicants have at least one year of previous residence hall or student life experience, but other types of work experience may be substituted. 

Salary and Benefits

Resident Director’s are employed on an eleven month contract beginning July 1st.  The position is approximately 30 hour per week.  The salary will be $8,300.00/contract year paid on a bi-weekly basis.  With the option to receive the UC Health Benefit plan (health, vision and dental are included).  Resident Director’s are also provided a meal plan of 14 meals/week plus a $225 eagle card credit.  Since the Resident Director is required to be enrolled in a fulltime graduate program they will also receive a $9,000.00 tuition scholarship/year.

Each Resident Director will also receive a furnished one bedroom apartment located in their assigned residence hall.  All utilities (water, electric, cable, local phone, and internet access) are included.
