Library Services

Services Available at the University of Charleston Libraries

Borrowing & Renewals

Users may borrow materials by bringing the items with their valid, bar-coded UC I.D. card to the Circulation Desk. Material is checked out for a three-week period and may be renewed one time for another three weeks, unless someone else has requested the item. You may renew an item in person or by telephone.

As in most libraries, periodicals (magazines and journals) and reference materials do not leave the library. Photocopiers, however, are available for patron use.

Users who have overdue material or unpaid fines over $3.00 will not be permitted to borrow materials.

Interlibrary Loan Policy

Materials not owned by the UC Libraries can be ordered from other libraries or from commercial document suppliers for UC faculty, staff, and students. Requests are generally processed within 24 hours of receipt, and can usually be expected to arrive in this library within 7–10 days. Turn-around time is, however, controlled by the lending library, so don't leave your requests until the last minute.

Online Interlibrary Loan forms are available electronically for book requests as well as for journal article loans.

Research Help

A professional librarian is available for assistance in locating resources or answering questions.  Reference help is also available via email, phone and live chat.  Patrons needing extensive assistance are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a librarian.

Information Literacy/Classroom Instruction

Faculty (or students) may schedule group or individual instruction in the use of the library and its resources by contacting the Reference Librarian at the Schoenbaum Library in Charleston at 304-357-4986 or the University Librarian in Beckley at 304-929-1414. You may also use the online Instruction Session Request Form or e-mail librarian@ucwv.edu.

E-Reserves and Reserve Shelves

Faculty can place library or personally owned items on Reserve in the library. The Instructor determines the length of the check-out period (i.e., one to three days), or if the item must be used only within the library. A faculty member should bring material to the Library Circulation Desk along with a completed Reserve Item Request Form.

Users must present a valid UC I.D. card to access Reserve material, even if it is going to be photocopied or used within the Library. (A note to Instructors: all items are removed from reserve at the end of each semester. Exceptions can be made for certain items that are needed each year.)

Group Study Rooms (Charleston Only)

Four group study rooms are available on the 4th floor.

Each room is equipped with a whiteboard and DVD Player.  These rooms cannot be reserved except under special circumstances as required by faculty.

In order to ensure equal access, study rooms are checked out for three hour periods at the circulation desk.

Printing

At the present time, the University provides each student with 500 pages of free printing per year. We remind students to print only what is needed for UC classes and assignments and to refrain from printing unnecessary material. Also, if you must print PowerPoint slides, please use a six-slides-to-a-page format. Overly large print jobs tie up the printers and are a barrier to the work of other students. Students will need to request that print jobs exceeding twenty pages be released at the circulation desk.
