Commencement Ceremony Details

Wristbands will be handed out at rehearsal to the graduates and only needed for indoor ceremony.

  • Ceremony wristbands are required for entrance to the indoor ceremony instead of tickets.
  • Ceremony wristbands are free of charge.
  • Graduates will receive Ten (10) wristbands at rehearsal (6-gymnasium seating and 4-overflow seating)

Prior to Commencement

  1. MANDATORY GRADUATE Check in at 10:15 am in the Eddie King Gym.
  2. GRADUATE receptions for each school (please check "Schedule of Events" page for specifics)
  3. GUESTS should have wristbands and be aware of when/where they need them. No wristbands are needed if the ceremony is held outdoors. In case of inclement weather, each graduate will receive six wristbands for gym seating and four wristbands for overflow seating at the rehearsal on Sunday morning.

Outdoor Ceremony

  • Wristbands are NOT required for the outside seating on the Riverfront lawn.
  • Seating on the Riverfront lawn is limited and will be offered as a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Seating for guests with disabilities and one family member will be available in a special section.
  • Air Conditioned seating is available in the auditorium (building 2) with a large video screen set up.

Indoor Ceremony/Inclement Weather

  • In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will take place inside the Eddie King Gymnasium www.ucwv.edu/map (building 5). WRISTBANDS will be REQUIRED due to fire regulations that restrict the total number of people in the gymnasium. The decision about the event will be made on Sunday morning and will be placed on UC website.
  • Graduates will receive Ten (10) wristbands at rehearsal (6-gymnasium seating and 4-overflow seating)
  • SIX wristbands will be allotted to each Graduate at rehearsal for the gymnasium seating. Please note that the wristband allocation is based upon the actual number of students participating in the ceremony, and capacity of the gym. Children under 3 years of age can sit on an adult’s lap. Please be respectful of those around you when considering this option. Strollers, carriers, etc. will not be permitted in the gym.
  • Seating for guests with disabilities and one family member will be available in a special section on the gym floor WRISTBAND REQUIRED.
  • FOUR wristbands will be allotted to each Graduate for overflow seating in the Auditorium (building 2) and Ballroom (building 3) with a large video screen set up. Please note that the wristband allocation is based upon the actual number of students participating in the ceremony, and the capacity of the auditorium (building 2) and ballroom (building 3).

A wristband guarantees admission into the gymnasium, however, it does not guarantee a particular seat.  Upon arrival to graduation, guests will be asked to show their wrist with the wristband.

Guests must have the secured wristband on their wrist to be admitted.  Guests who do not have wristbands will not be admitted. 

Timing and Additional Information

  • Families and guests are asked to be seated by 1:45 pm prior to the procession of the graduating students.
  • Please plan your clothing and footwear accordingly. Spiked heels may not be appropriate for the outdoor ceremony as there is no flooring in the seating area.
  • You may want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and/or a visor in the event of hot weather. The outdoor seating is not covered.
  • Before the ceremony, be sure to make arrangements where you will meet your graduate at the conclusion.
  • During the procession and recession of the ceremony, families and guests should remain in their places.
  • During the ceremony (1) per graduate may stand to take photos, but please keep the aisles clear.
