Ericka Zimmerman serves as the Chair of the Department of Athletic Training and the Program Director for the Athletic Training Program. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Allied Health from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, a Master of Science degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training from Indiana State University, and a Doctorate of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Marshall University.

Ericka is a 2010 recipient of the NATA Service Award in recognition of her service to the profession of athletic training. In 2008 Ericka was recognized as the 2008 West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (WVATA) Educator of the Year.  She was a 2007 Marquis Who’s Who of American Women. In March 2006, she was recognized as the 2006 WVATA Athletic Trainer of the Year. She was also selected as the 2006 Outstanding Young Alumni for Indiana State University’s Department of Athletic Training.

Prior to arriving at the University of Charleston in 2002, Ericka served as the Head Athletic Trainer for Georgetown College (KY) from 1997–2002 and Instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies. She was the Head Athletic Trainer for Midway College and staff athletic trainer for Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center from 1996–1997.

Ericka's interests include legal issues in athletic training; policy and procedure development in the collegiate athletic training setting; leadership, communication, and conflict resolution; psychosocial issues; and upper extremity assessment. 

Kelvin Phan, MEd, ATC

Kelvin Phan serves as the Coordinator of Clinical Education for the Department of Athletic Training. He is an instructor in the Athletic Training Program and also provides athletic training services for the University of Charleston's softball team. Kelvin earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of Texas in Arlington (TX).

Following UT-Arlington, Kelvin completed the Post-Professional Athletic Training Education Program at Old Dominion University (Va.), earning his Master of Science in Education degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training. While in graduate school, Kelvin worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for Norfolk State University, providing medical care primarily for the football and baseball teams.

Kelvin's interests include clinical education in athletic training education and participating in mentoring, leadership, and scholarly activities. He is a native of Houston, Texas, and enjoys spending time watching and participating in sports and outdoor activities.

Dan Clifton, M.Ed., ATC

Dan Clifton joined University of Charleston in the fall of 2011 as an assistant athletic trainer and instructor. He works primarily with the men’s soccer and baseball teams and teaches the first responder course in the Athletic Training Department.

Dan received a B.S. in athletic training from Ithaca College in New York in 2010 where he was assigned to men’s basketball, men’s and women’s rowing  and men’s and women’s indoor track and field. He was also assigned to Cornell University’s Sprint Football team.

Following Ithaca College, Dan attended University of Virginia where he received a Masters of Education in athletic training while working with the women’s field hockey team.

Michael Nyquist, MA, ATC

Michael joined the University of Charleston Athletic Training staff in March of 2012 as the Coordinator of Clinical services, Head Athletic Trainer, and Instructor. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Sports Medicine concentration from Lees-McRae College and a Master of Arts in Physical Education-Sport Management from East Tennessee State University.

Prior to arriving at the University of Charleston, Michael served as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and Head Athletic Trainer at Lees-McRae College. He is a NATA certified athletic trainer as well as a North Carolina and Tennessee Licensed athletic trainer.

Jenni Johnson, MS, ATC

Jenni Johnson joined the University of Charleston staff as an assistant athletic trainer in February 2012. Her primary roles involve working the Golden Eagle's Baseball and Women’s Soccer programs while providing secondary coverage of Women’s Tennis and Women’s Golf.  She is also an Instructor in the Athletic Training Program.

Jenni was employed as the Director of Rehabilitation at WorldWide Chiropractic & Sports Medicine for the past 14 years as well as the Athletic Trainer for Ripley High School.  Other recent positions have included being the Athletic Trainer for Revolution Gymnastics and Flip Fest Gymnastics Summer Camps.  She also served as the Athletic Trainer for the Level 9 National Gymnastics Championships in Charleston and as the Athletic Trainer for the WV Lightning and Rockets Semi-Professional Football teams.

Jenni earned her BS in Physical Education/Athletic Training from WVU, where she worked with the football, swimming & diving, men’s tennis and gymnastics teams.  Following WVU, she earned her MS in Health & Wellness – Health Sciences from the University of Kentucky, where she received a Graduate Assistant position.  While at UK, she provided coverage for the football, women’s basketball and gymnastics team.  Jenni is a member of the NATA, WVATA, where she is on the Governmental Affairs Committee and is a member of the WVSSAC Sports Medicine Committee. 

Kaitlin Kelly, MS, ATC

Kaitlin Kelly joined the University of Charleston as an athletic trainer in August 2012. Her role includes working with Golden Eagles’ women’s basketball, as an assistant with football, volleyball, rowing, and cheerleading. She is also an instructor in the athletic training program.

Kaitlin received a B.S. in athletic training from University of Connecticut, where she worked with football and men’s basketball as well as area high schools and St. Joseph’s College in Hartford, CT. After her time at UConn, she received her M.S. in Athletic Training from Michigan State University while providing coverage to men’s and women’s cross country/track and field teams and women’s soccer. She also instructed a CPR/First Aid/Personal Safety course.
