2006-2006 Women’s Soccer Preseason Preview

The University of Charleston Women’s Soccer Program is expecting a significant improvement from years past.  With quality returners, a strong recruiting class, a new field and a new look, the Golden Eagles are poised to make waves in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, WVIAC, and within the Great Lakes Region.  “It is an exciting time to be a student/athlete at the University of Charleston”, says Coach Diuguid.  “First and foremost, all of the players are going to receive a quality education.  With their degree from UC, they will have the tools necessary to enter today’s workforce and be at the forefront of technology, innovation and productivity.  As an institution, the university is committed to each student as an individual”, says Coach Diuguid.

From a team perspective, the Golden Eagles will be more talented than a year ago.  “As a team, the players have always played their hearts out for me and the concept of team has always been our focus.  Last year, we were rittled with injuries and bad breaks.  It was a great learning experience and one that the team will not forget.  As a result, the coaching staff and the players had to reevaluate, reorganize and work more diligently to improve upon a quality base.  With 13 returners and eight incoming freshman, we expect the level of play in both practice and competition to increase significantly”, said Coach Diuguid.

UC will play another competitive schedule for the 2006-07 season.  This year will also feature an alumni game and a youth day during a home match against Davis & Elkins.  The inaugural alumni game will take place at Triana field on August 19th at 4pm and Youth Day will take place on September 20th at 7pm.   “The alumni game is long overdo and is the beginning of a long tradition as the woman’s soccer program continues to grow and develop.  The youth day has been coordinated in conjunction with a home match to inspire young girl’s to continue to train and play soccer at a competitive level.  Many have dreams and aspirations to continue their soccer careers at the next level.  We are excited and anticipate strong support at both events”, said Coach Diuguid.

We eagerly await the team’s arrival to pre-season.  I     am confident that all of the players have made a commitment to fitness and nutrition. A new field, new players, a new look and a new commitment from returners equates to a new beginning.  The future of woman’s soccer at the University of Charleston is bright”, said Coach Diuguid.
