Coach’s USC U13 girls make history

The University Soccer Club-Eagles U13 girls become the first girl’s team to advance to the Region I semifinals in state history.  Prior to this regional, the last boy’s team to advance was ten years ago.  “At the beginning of the spring season, it was our team goal to advance.  Having accomplished that goal is very rewarding.  The girl’s worked very hard and played a difficult schedule in preparation for regionals”, said Coach Diuguid.  The USC-Eagles won the MASC tournament in Cincinnati, OH, the state tournament in order to qualify for regionals and were finalists at the Wrangler/McDonald’s Shootout in Greensboro, NC.

The girl’s won all preliminary matches in route to the semi-finals:  Rhode Island 4-0, New York-West 2-1, and Delaware 2-0.  With an impressive scoring margin of 8-1, the U13’s set their sights on bracket D winners, Massachusetts.  The Massachusetts Scorpions were ranked #1 in the region and 8th nationally coming into the semi-final.  Massachusetts beat West Virginias 2-0 and went on to beat New Jersey 2-0 in the finals.  In the most recent national rankings, the U13 girl’s cracked the top 50 teams in the nation with a ranking of 50th and raised their regional ranking from 23rd to 13th.   “It was a tremendous run and I am very proud of the girl’s effort, dedication and team work.  They are a very unselfish, knowledgeable group of athletes with a promising future”, said Coach Diuguid.
