The driving rain and cool temperatures at Schoenbaum Stadium weren’t enough to dampen the season finale for the University of Charleston’s women’s soccer team, as the Golden Eagles ran by Pitt-Johnstown 4-0 in a spirited West Virginia Conference matchup Wednesday.
“I thought we played well,” said UC coach Todd Diuguid. “It was a great way to send our three seniors off. I’m glad we ended on a positive note.”
Seniors Andrea Cooper, Maria Taylor and Katharine Newell each played their final games in Golden Eagle uniforms.
A vocal UC squad got things started when Taryn Conklin scored the first goal off an assist from Sharon Lapinsky 5 minutes and 28 seconds into the first half. Conklin notched her second goal of the match when she received a pass at midfield and raced by two defenders to get the score.
Lapinsky scored the Eagles’ third goal of the first half off a pass from Holli Dalton 10 minutes before the break.
Seven minutes into the second half, Lapinsky hit a chip shot from 18 yards away to score UC’s fourth and final goal. The Golden Eagles outshot the Mountain Cats 13-8.
Pitt-Johnstown goalkeeper Stephanie Paha tallied five saves while Whitney Sharp had three for UC.
Although UC (7-12) did not qualify for postseason play, the Eagles do end the season by beating a playoff qualifier in Pitt-Johnstown (8-12).
The Mountain Cats will play in the first round of the WVC playoffs against Concord (10-7-1, 8-3-1) at 3 p.m. Oct. 30 in Athens. The winner will face either Wheeling Jesuit or Wesleyan in the semifinals on Nov. 2.
