Lisa Lee led a balanced offense with 25 points as the University of Charleston remained undefeated with an 81-60 victory Saturday afternoon against Shippensburg (Pa.) in the Red Roof Classic at Eddie King Gym on UC’s campus.
In the second game, West Virginia State beat Winston-Salem State (N.C.) 61-47.
Lee made 11-of-16 shots and landed nine rebounds. Emily Jones added 14 points, six rebounds and three assists and Rachel Pike donated 12 points for the Golden Eagles (10-0). UC’s Jihan Williams contributed 10 points and eight boards.
The Golden Eagles hit on 49.3 percent (33-of-67) of their shots while holding Shippensburg to 35.4 percent. UC started the game with a hot hand, sinking 50 percent (19-of-38) of its shots in the opening half en route to a 40-28 lead.
"In first half,’’ Winn said, "the game plan was to try and get them running. We thought we could use our numbers versus their numbers and get them fatigued.
"I think that was accomplished with the pressing and running game. The second half was strictly player-to-player [defense] and I think they were little bit tired from [the] first half and it made them shoot a poor percentage and I felt we took advantage.’’
For Shippensburg (6-5), Shanna Oaddams scored 22 points on 10-of-16 accuracy with seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Phylicia Bessick chipped in 13 points and six boards and Magan Fogle had 11 points.
Despite the Golden Eagles’ quick start to the season, Winn sees plenty of areas she has targeted for improvement in the upcoming year.
"What I did not like [Saturday] was not adhering to our offensive rules,’’ said the coach. "We run a motion offense and when you do that you have to run and execute the rules of your offense or what happens is you don’t have any spacing and we did not have any spacing. Even though we scored 81 points, I’m not really sure how we did it.’’
"We need continue to work on our 3-point shots. We have great 3-point shooters, but there’s not enough confidence for them to keep shooting those shots. I have to tell them to keep going ahead and shooting. And free throws, too. Those are three things we need to spend some time on. We’re pretty solid defensively. [We] need to continue to work on boxing out and continue to work defensively on using our different presses. Otherwise, I think were confident about our defenses.’’
UC will play host to Indiana (Pa.) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Indians have won seven of their first 10 games.
