Fairmont State Clinches
WVIAC Regular Season Title
February 26, 2005
Fairmont State controlled its own destiny in the WVIAC Regular Season Chamiponship battle with the University of Charleston. The Golden Eagles completed their regular season on Feb. 21 with an impressive 94-70 road win over Concord. Finishing the regular season with an overall 24-3 record and 17-1 in the conference, UC had to wait for Fairmont State to play their final two contests in order to decide who would be crowned WVIAC Regular Season Champion and receive a first round bye in the WVIAC Tournament scheduled to begin Monday, February 28 at various campus locations.
Fairmont State needed to win both of its remaining contests to claim the title. A Falcon loss to either West Liberty State or Salem International would give UC the crown. Fairmont State defeated West Liberty State on the road Feb. 24, in a close contest, 62-60. The game was decided on a three-point field goal by Fairmont's Ashley Reed who methodically nailed the game winner in the final three seconds. The Falcons returned home on Feb. 26 to battle Salem International. Fairmont handed Salem International a 72-53 loss, thus clinching the WVIAC Regular Season Championship and gaining a first round bye in the WVIAC Tournament.
