Hot shooting carried the University of Charleston past Concord 81-64 in West Virginia Conference women’s basketball Monday evening at Athens.
The Golden Eagles (25-2 overall, 17-1 WVC) made 58.8 percent of their shots, including 60.7 percent in the second half. UC also sank 18-of-22 free throws and held a plus-10 rebound margin (38-28).
Lisa Lee led a balanced offense with 18 points and eight rebounds. Courtney Thomas added 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Erica McElroy contributed 15 points on 7-of-7 accuracy with three boards, three assists and two steals. Laura Kinsler chipped in 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, four rebounds and four assists.
"That’s not too shabby,’’ said UC coach Sherry Winn of her team’s shooting display. "We struggled a little bit then we came back and pretty much took over. They’re pretty consistent.
"I think it’s because we have a lot of people who can score. Because you have that, you can spread defenses out and they can’t concentrate on one player.’’
For Concord (13-13, 7-10), Shari Walker netted a game-high 21 points. Samm Nester added 13 points and four boards and Jessica Ferguson donated 10 points. Becca Flanagan had six points, four rebounds and five assists.
UC completed its schedule and now waits for next week’s tournament at the Civic Center.
