Courtney Thomas scored 20 points to help the University of Charleston get back on the winning track with a 65-50 victory Thursday evening over Wheeling Jesuit in West Virginia Conference women’s basketball at Eddie King Gym.

The Golden Eagles (20-6 overall, 13-2 WVC) were coming off two conference losses in a span of five days. UC fell to West Virginia Wesleyan 73-61 Monday and lost to Concord 81-71 in overtime Feb. 8.

“I think it was a big win for us, especially coming off the losses we’ve had,’’ said UC coach Sherry Winn. “We really needed to get back on track and win games.

“[Wheeling Jesuit is] a winning team. They’ve always had a good tradition. Defensively, I thought we did a great job on them.’’

It was UC’s fifth straight season of 20 or more victories.

Thomas made 5-of-9 shots from the floor and 9-of-10 free-throw attempts to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Jihann Williams added 10 points and six rebounds and Rachel Pike donated 10 points and nine boards for the Golden Eagles.

UC held only a two-point lead (28-26) at halftime but limited Wheeling Jesuit to 29 percent shooting in the second half to pull ahead. The Cardinals managed only a 26.7-percent shooting effort for the game.

Katie Repicky had 10 points for Wheeling Jesuit (14-11, 9-7). The Cardinals’ Megan O’Donnell chipped in nine points and 13 rebounds and Jenna Johnson added nine points and eight boards.
