BELMONT, N.C. West Virginia Conference women's basketball teams have been happy to see Belmont Abbey on their schedule this season.
Belmont Abbey had already lost to two WVC schools earlier in the year (Ohio Valley and West Virginia State), and the Mountain State opposition got even tougher for the Crusaders Wednesday night when the University of Charleston paid a visit here.
The fourth-ranked Golden Eagles (7-0) pulled away in the second half for a 77-60 victory over Belmont Abbey (4-3).
UC only led 36-30 at halftime, but shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half and the Eagle defense limited the Crusaders to just 36 percent shooting.
Lisa Lee scored 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and collected five steals for Coach Sherry Winn's team. Rachel Pike added 16 points and Courtney Thomas contributed 15 points for the Golden Eagles.
UC, coming off last season's trip to the NCAA Elite Eight, play Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Eddie King before a two-week holiday break. The Golden Eagle men face Shawnee State (Ohio) at 7:30 in the second game of the UC doubleheader.
